BOPPIN' with BENNY 1st Series Completed
After 12 months of intensive development the young Adult television series Dangerously Smart is now out in the international market place. The format for the first series has been expanded to 13 episodes. The story line for the second series has also been developed. Location scouting began in June in both Malaysia, Singapore and potentially Indonesia. Post-production will be in Australia. Dangerously Smart partners Palm Beach Pictures with the media production arm of the Singapore education company MindChamps.
The digital cinema conversion of our Award winning film Newsfront has now been completed. The DCP was created at Frame Set and Match under the guidance of Steve Dunn. The digital conversion was financed by the National Film and Sound Archive who were keen to have this classic film available again to cinemas throughout the world. Newsfront is constantly in demand for screenings but nowadays so few cinemas can show the restored 35 mm print. Our special thanks to NSFA’s terrific staff Meg Labrum and Gayle Lake who masterminded the conversion. A reel by reel comparison screening was held at the AFTRS cinema and the 2K digital version more than held its own against the 35mm print, in fact the blacks seemed truer and the opticals sharper, thanks to some clever work by FSM. With the recent passing of Wendy Hughes, who played the female lead, Newsfront can continue to enthrall audiences with one of Wendy’s great characters, a talented woman in the male dominated Newsreel industry. Roadshow are now looking into releasing Newsfront in the Blue Ray DVD format.
Palm Beach Pictures is the production company for producer David Elfick. His feature film career began with the two surfing classics MORNING OF THE EARTH and CRYSTAL VOYAGER before moving onto the challenge of such feature films as the ground breaking NEWSFRONT, the nuclear thriller CHAIN REACTION and the musical STARSTRUCK. Palm Beach Pictures has concentrated on high-quality productions, many with a strong Australian resonance. Memorable films include the genre-defining 'quirky comedies' STARSTRUCK, EMOH RUO and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 WAYS, the contemporary dramas BLACKROCK and NO WORRIES and the coming of age comedy LOVE IN LIMBO. Palm Beach Pictures worked with Phillip Noyce's Rumbalara Films on the production of RABBIT PROOF FENCE. Palm Beach Pictures films have used many of the great names in Australian cinema including Russell Crowe, Heath Ledger, Geoffrey Rush and Mel Gibson. The most recent feature film production for Palm Beach Pictures is TWO FISTS ONE HEART (2008).
The company has also specialized in feature film drama beginning with the internationally acclaimed mini series trilogy FIELDS OF FIRE. International successes include the biopic NEVER TELL ME NEVER. Palm Beach Pictures has specialized in television co-productions with the UK.
Palm Beach Pictures has also produced a number of documentary films including the Vietnam war themed COMBAT WOMEN and two Phillip Noyce films on Indonesia TAPAK DEWATEA and PULAU DEWATA.
